6 The competitiveness report on "the Top 10 competitiveness enterprises in the optical communications industry of Global & China market in 2020” (Abstract Edition)
Preface • Work summary
At the beginning of 2020, a sudden outbreak of COVID-19 spreads around the world, which seriously influenced
the global socioeconomic development and caused the deceleration of the construction of 5G both in China and
the world. The fact that 4G network construction and fiber to home project has reached to its peak but the large-
scale construction of 5G has not yet been established, the adjustment of supply and demand in the field of fiber and
cable and the declination of operators’ traditional business leading to weak global demand for fiber optic cable,
overcapacity, inventory levels rise and fiber price fall. In 2019, the global optical fiber and cable market demand
declined, mainly due to the contraction of the Chinese market, which alone accounted for more than 50 percent of
the total global optical fiber and cable market demand. In India, the world's third largest fiber optic cable market,
telecom operators cut 2019 cable purchases because of the financial problems. In North America and Europe, the
demand for optical fiber and cable continued to grow in 2019, despite slower growth than that of 2018. As for the
South American market, as political stability has returned, most South American telecom companies have resumed
investment, mainly focusing on fiber optic cables, leading to an increased demand.
The year 2020 has been the 14th year for Network Telecom Information Research Institute to be engaged in the
competition of global | Chinese optical communication enterprises. The selection results of the list of the 2020
Chinese top 10 most competitive optical communication enterprises also clearly show the competition situation
of the global | Chinese optical communication industry and enterprises in various sub-industries in 2020. As can
be seen from the survey data and the monitoring results of optical communications enterprise competitiveness, in
the global optical fiber cable list, top 10 enterprises has been divided by four countries, including the United States
(Corning), Italy (Prysmian), Japan (Furukawa Electric/OFS, Sumitomo Electric, Fujikura) and China (YOFC,
HTGD, FiberHome Communication, ZTT, Futong), in which Chinese companies account for half of the market.
YOFC, HTDG, and ZTT and FiberHome Communications have occupied a large share of the market. YOFC ranked
the second in the world with a market share of 9.14%, and HTDG ranked the third with a market share of 7.94%.
FiberHome Communications, ZTT and Futong ranked fifth, sixth and seventh with 6.48%, 8.28% and 7.49% shares
respectively. Corning, Furukawa Electric/OFS, Prysmian, Sumitomo Electric and Fujikura: 16.68%, 10.86%, 7.27%,
7.54% and 4.79% respectively.

In the global optical transmission and network access equipment list, Huawei continues to maintain a leading
position, with a comprehensive competitiveness score of 73 points higher than the second place, COSCO
communications. The top 10 companies in this list are from 5 countries: Finland (Nokia), Japan (NEC, Sumitomo
Electric), the United States (Ciena, Ericsson, Infinera), China (Huawei, ZTE, FiberHome), and Germany (ADVA).
Among them, Huawei keeps a firm grip on the lead, with a global market share of 20.49% in optical transmission
and network access equipment. Ciena ranked second with 14.33%, Nokia is third with 10.97%, FiberHome is fourth
with 12.45%, Ericsson is fifth with 10.24%, and ZTE ranked sixth. Infinera, ADVA and Sumitomo Electric occupied
5.01%, 7.26%, 3.49% and 1.28% market share respectively.
